Grand Canyon December 2001

Spent two days at the Grand Canyon.  We would have liked to hike down the Canyon but 4 inches of snow had fallen just a few days before so the path down was icy.  It was very quiet compared to my visit in September.  We stayed at the El Tovar which was built in 1905.  It's like a log cabin inside with big fireplaces and mounted deer and moose heads on the walls.  One advantage of visiting in the winter is that the sunrise is late - 7.30am - so we were able to get up in time!  It was freezing and we walked a few miles to the best vantage point.  It really is the best time to see the Canyon as when the sun hits the rock it changes colour.
The deer are totally unafraid of humans and surprised us one evening when we walked back to the hotel.
